济宁历史悠久，文化源远流长，是东方文明的重要发祥地之一。汶泗流域众多的细石器地点，是济宁最早的人类活动遗迹，距今已经一万多年；汉代，儒家文化发扬光大，儒风长盛，名仕辈出；唐宋以来，不同的思潮和文化在济宁交汇融合，形成了熠熠生辉的独特文化风貌；元代之后，京杭大运河的开通使济宁成为鲁西南的政治、经济、文化中心。
As one of the important birthplaces of oriental civilization, Jining enjoys a long history as well as a rich culture. Numerous microlithic sites in the Wensi River Basin were the earliest traces of human activities in Jining dating back ten thousand years ago. In the Han Dynasty, Confucian culture flourished. Coupling with ever-developing Confucianism, the place has ever witnessed emergence of celebrities successively. Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, different ideological trends and cultural notions have converged in Jining, forming its unique and glittering cultural features. After the Yuan Dynasty, the opening of the Grand Canal made Jining transform into the political, economic and cultural center of southwest Shandong Province.
据1989 年考古发掘，济宁发现细石器地点38 处。距今约一万年前，人们进入新石器时代，先后经历了北辛文化、大汶口文化、龙山文化3 个阶段。
According to the archaeological excavation, 38 microlithic sites were found in Jining in 1989. Dating backten thousand years ago, people entered the Neolithic Age, and experienced three stages: Beixin Culture, Dawenkou Culture and Longshan Culture.
汶上县贾柏遗址是济宁境内已经发现的最早的新石器时代人类文化遗址，是北辛文化的重要代表。大汶口文化时期，人们已经烧制出十分精美的白陶。这件白陶鬶出土于曲阜西夏侯遗址中，鬶做成鸟形是鸟图腾在器物中的体现。大汶口文化的延续是龙山文化，龙山文化以烧制黑陶著称，又被人们称为“黑陶文化”。
The Jiabai site in Wenshang is the earliest Neolithic human cultural site in Jining. It is an important representative of Beixin Culture. During the Dawenkou Culture period, people have made exquisite white pottery. This White Pottery Gui, which is like a bird, is unearthed from the Xiahou site in Qufu. It reflects the function of bird totem.After Dawenkou Culture period, Longshan Culture is famous for making black pottery, which is also known as “Black Pottery Culture”.
